The work Pain & Beauty by Jan C. Schlegel (*1965) celebrates the portrait. He started his project in 1998 and has been travelling regularly to Asia and Africa to photograph ethnic groups and tribes. In order to do justice to the authenticity of the portrayed Schlegel spend several weeks together with them and takes their picture always in their own habit - at the market on the street or even the village square. Whereas the immediate surroundings or living circumstances do not bring any importance to the image. Furthermore the neutral background allows the viewer to perceive the portrayed in his or her very own uniqueness.
