Inta Ruka is one of the most renowned contemporary photographers in the Baltic states. Born in Riga in 1958, the artist has taken pictures of her fellow countrymen for more than two decades – mainly in the rural region of Balvi or in the Latvian capital Riga. In her series „Amalias Street 5“, she focuses on the inhabitants of a certain complex of buildings in Riga. Offside the touristic old town with its completely restored sights, the observer gets an undisguised view on the rebuilding and breakup phase in Latvia since the integration into the European Union.
